as far as he can remember when he was a kid, it used to be Rs 1.25. that's for a masala dosa ( Rs 1 for a sada dosa). that used to be his favourite snack when he was asked what he wanted for a special treat.
if you don't know what a masala dosa is, here is a definition given in the menu card of an indian restaurant: thin rice and lentil creeps filled with savoury potato filling, and served with spicy sambar and coconut chutney.
once his mom gave hime 5Rs to get breakfast, to get 4 masala dosas for their family of four. poor kid. he lost the 5Rs and came home crying what the consequence might be for losing the money. but his mom comforted him. she hugged him and said, 'thats ok Ranjith, dont worry'. he was of course confused. the same mom who makes a scene when he spills a tumbler of coffee doesnt seem to bother of a even greater crime. women!
there were instances where Ranjit had to share a masala dosa with his elder sister. they made a fair food sharing pact by which the person who splits the food cannot choose first which share he or she wants.
all the pleasant dosa memories were playing in Ranjits mind. 'Sir, may i help you?' asked the cashier at the register. he smiled and said 'hmm ya, can i have a plain roll, toasted & light buttered with 2 scrambled eggs, salt & pepper please?'
